If I could describe the Tycho show in one word it would be “hypnotizing.” As cliché as that sounds, from the lights, the crowd, and the production, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING just blew me away. Opening up with “PBS” you could just feel the energy from the crowd radiating through the whole venue.
Here’s a quick scan of tonight’s cool shows in Seattle.
Capital Cities is a band that can make even the most stubborn cross-armed-too-good-for-dancing concert goer tap their toes and bob their heads. Known for their breakthrough radio hit, “Safe and Sound,” this Los Angeles-based duo offers so much more musically and in their live show that people need to know about.
I saw a band I never thought I’d see this week. After years of silence, sporadic rumors, and almost nothing in terms of live appearances, Long Island’s co-reigning kings Brand New has turned up the volume dramatically in recent months. Festival appearances have increased to full-fledged tours, and rumors of new material on the way seem increasingly promising. When I heard that Brand New was making a stop at Showbox Seattle for their newest tour, there wasn’t a doubt in my mind: I have to go. Torrance punk wunderkinds Joyce Manor as tour support laid a thick, delightfully sweet icing on the cake.
On April 2nd, California rockers The Neighbourhood led their headlining tour into Seattle at the iconic Showbox SoDo. We arrived late thanks to myself and Kelly’s terrible timing skills and missed the first set, Born Casual. We were, however, able to experience indie rock band Kitten tear up the stage. Hailing from Los Angeles, Kitten formed in 2009 with the release of their first EP “Sunday School”following in 2010.
LA’s Kitten just released a new song, Why I Wait, a departure from the band’s standard fare but a gorgeously dynamic piece nonetheless. The song, featuring the silky side of frontwoman Chloe Chaidez’ vocal talents, is streaming now on SoundCloud. The band will be playing several shows in the PNW in the next few weeks, including Spokane 3/31, Seattle’s Showbox SODO 4/2, and Portland 4/3 supporting The Neighbourhood with Born Casual. Tickets are $26.50 for the Seattle show, available now on the Showbox calendar!
I honestly do not have a lot to say about this tour/night. I had heard some pretty intense things about GWAR and how risky it could be as a photographer. I did a bit of YouTube research and saw tons of fake blood and other bodily fluids shooting out towards the crowd; I was less than stoked. Thankfully, my lack of camera protection ended up being okay, as long as I paid attention to the mechanism shooting out the fake blood while I was doing my thang. That being said, it was an awesome experience. whitechapel was nothing short of amazing; it is astounding to me just how loud and overwhelming (in the best kind of way) this band is and I am impressed each time I get to watch them. GWAR was overall, well, weird. Awesome, and totally weird. But, isn’t that the point? Enjoy the weird photos!
The Feel This Tour made its Seattle stop at Showbox Sodo on Saturday, November 26th. Fans packed the house while the risk-taking I’ll-pay-admission-at-the-door folks lingered outside in hopes of snagging leftover tickets. Sleeping With Sirens, Breathe Carolina, Issues, and Our Last Night all played outstanding sets and had decent lighting for the most part–our only wish is that more tours stopped at Showbox Sodo!
UK’s Disclosure has already built a massive fanbase in their home country, and the duo is quickly ascending the ranks in the US. After huge sets at Coachella, Lollapalooza, and a sold out show at Central Park, the pop/dance act is embarking on a huge world tour, including a few dates in Washington. The tour, featuring supporting act T. Williams, will make Seattle’s renowned Showbox SoDo October 9th, as well as the Spokane and Boise the following two nights, respectively.
