Capital Cities At Showbox SoDo 11/16
Capital Cities is a band that can make even the most stubborn cross-armed-too-good-for-dancing concert goer tap their toes and bob their heads. Known for their breakthrough radio hit, “Safe and Sound,” this Los Angeles-based duo offers so much more musically and in their live show that people need to know about.
It is quite the accomplishment for any artist to be able to draw a crowd on a Sunday night for a show. And although they were just here over Labor Day weekend for Bumbershoot, not only did Capital Cities fill up the Showbox SoDo, but they had everyone dancing and singing the night away. With fan favorites such as “I Sold My Bed, But Not My Stereo,” “Love Away,” and “Tell Me How to Live” you get the true Capital Cities live experience. And although this is my third time seeing the band live, this had to have been the best production I have seen from them. The clean staging set-up, their always stylish outfits, super cool demeanor, and killer light show totally took them to the next level.
It is basically a live show faux pas for a band to play more than two covers. If any artist was to get a pass on this, it would undoubtedly be these guys. They graced us with not one, but four awesome covers that night, each one paying it’s respects to the original, but still having the very distinct musical flare of Capital Cities. Their super groovy rendition of “Stayin’ Alive” made famous by disco icons, the Bee Gees is always a favorite of mine. The guys also included “Do You Remember the Time” (Michael Jackson), “Nothing Compares 2 U” (The Family), and “Holiday” (Madonna).
Closing out the night with their super dance-y/edm-ified remix of “Safe and Sound,” might be the most epic way to closet out any Sunday night, ever.
