From: Seattle, WA
As much as we love our area rockers, Seattle hip hop of recent years has been a hell of a lot more exciting than the local alternative/rock scene. Even before Macklemore exploded in 2011, the community has held an admirable air of humbleness and seemingly-universal support among artists, making it feel more like a big happy family than a bunch of narcissists competing for the spotlight. It’s a refreshing change, and a few artists have come up and made pretty great careers for themselves.
This leads me to introduce our current feature, The Breaklites.
The Breaklites are a four-man hip hop group with roots from Seattle to Tacoma, and today they released the album of the year, I ♥ America. This may not be much of a statement at a whole seven days into 2014, but trust me when I say that it’s worth the free download. If I’m backing myself into a corner here, it’s because I can’t stop dancing on my yoga ball chair while giving one ambiguous middle finger to the country we regretfully reside within for long enough to formulate a legitimate sentence.
In all seriousness, I ♥ America summarizes the fruition of the so-called American Dream over the span of 8 intricately crafted tracks, and The Breaklites are giving it away for free on their website and via SoundCloud (below). You owe it to yourself to listen–and if you like what you hear, which you will (or else), spread the word!
Check out the album release show this Saturday, January 11th at Jazzbones in Tacoma!
